Australia gas reservation proposal sparks industry warnings

The Australian Federal Government is proposing a domestic gas reservation scheme that would require LNG exporters to reserve up to 20 per cent of their production for domestic customers. The policy aims to secure local supply and reduce wholesale gas prices, particularly on the east coast, as coal-fired power stations retire and the country transitions toward renewable energy.

Energy producers have raised concerns regarding the potential impact on future investment. Industry leaders, including executives from Origin Energy and Woodside, warn that the policy could discourage new supply projects. Specifically, there are concerns that forcing domestic sales during periods of abundance could distort prices and undermine the economic viability of projects that rely on export revenues to justify high upfront development costs.

While companies generally support the goal of ensuring domestic availability, they argue the scheme's design is critical. Critics suggest that if the policy is implemented poorly, it could lead to higher-cost gas being diverted offshore while low-cost production remains in Australia, potentially failing to address long-term security needs.
