Australia health insurance rebate cuts face criticism

Proposed federal government cuts to the private health insurance rebate for Australians aged 65 and over are facing criticism from industry bodies and political opposition. Private Healthcare Australia (PHA) warned in a Senate inquiry submission that the changes could affect more than 3 million older Australians, potentially causing up to 62,000 people to drop their coverage and 200,000 to downgrade their plans next year.

PHA noted that such shifts could increase pressure on the public hospital system, specifically regarding elective procedures like cataract removals, hip replacements, and knee replacements. The organization highlighted that many older Australians rely on private insurance to avoid long public waiting lists and to access dental, physiotherapy, and optical care.

In the Australian Capital Territory, the Liberal opposition has labeled the proposal a “cost-shift pure and simple,” arguing it will strain already stretched public hospitals. The federal government maintains that the policy will save $3 billion over four years, which is intended to be reinvested into expanding aged-care services.
