Opposition has intensified, with Deputy Leader Jane Hume describing the reform as an “$11 billion tax” and the Liberal opposition in the ACT labeling it a “cost-shift pure and simple.” The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has also joined the criticism, with President Dr. Danielle McMullen calling for exemptions to ensure savings do not come “at the expense of healthcare access.”

Discrepancies have emerged regarding the scale of the impact. While government modelling suggests 44,000 people might drop cover, reports from Medibank indicate the figure could reach 91,000. Employment Minister Amanda Rishworth defended the decision, clarifying that the government is not scrapping rebates entirely but removing the additional age-based component to be more resourceful with taxpayer money.
