Australia health rebate changes face criticism from AMA

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has called for exemptions for older Australians regarding proposed changes to private health insurance rebates. The AMA warns that removing age-based rebate components could increase costs for seniors, particularly those on lower incomes, potentially driving them to downgrade or cancel their coverage.

AMA President Dr. Danielle McMullen stated that while the government aims to secure aged care funding, these savings should not come at the expense of healthcare access. The association expressed concern that reduced private participation will increase demand on public hospitals that are already under significant strain.

The Albanese Government faces scrutiny over the scale of the impact, with approximately 1.2 million older Australians expected to be affected. While government modelling suggests 44,000 people might drop their cover, reports from Medibank indicate the figure could be as high as 91,000. Employment Minister Amanda Rishworth defended the decision as a necessary measure to be resourceful with taxpayer money, clarifying that the government is not scrapping rebates entirely but removing the additional age-based component.
