Australia implements significant student visa reforms

The Australian Government has implemented significant reforms to its student visa program, effective October 2. The new regulations aim to prevent foreign nationals from using student visas as a method to repeatedly extend temporary stays within the country.

A major change dictates that primary applicants currently in Australia on a student visa can no longer apply for a subsequent student visa from within the country. To obtain a new student visa, applicants must now be outside Australia when the application is lodged and remain outside the country until the new visa is granted.

The reforms also include tighter regulations regarding family members accompanying international students. Additionally, updates to country and education provider ‘Evidence Levels’ by the Department of Home Affairs have introduced new documentary requirements for visa applicants.

The ISANA International Education Association has responded to these changes, advocating for greater transparency and clearer communication. The association expressed concerns regarding uncertainty for students who have already accepted offers or paid deposits and is calling for improved guidance to help education providers manage immigration-risk mechanisms.
