Australia prepares for 2026 Census as citizens urged to participate

The Australian Bureau of Statistics will conduct the national Census on Tuesday, 11 August 2026. All households are required to answer about 66 questions covering education, employment, living arrangements, languages, gender, sexual orientation and up to four ancestries. An optional question allows respondents to have their personal details securely stored by the National Archives for 99 years before later public release. Failure to respond can result in a fine.

The Census data underpins planning for healthcare, transport, schools, infrastructure and community services. Religious affiliation, including Christianity, is recorded to help gauge the role of faith communities in Australian society and to inform funding and support decisions. Organisers stress the importance of accurate responses for a clearer picture of Australia’s demographic and cultural makeup.
