Australia proposes demand mechanism for low carbon liquid fuel sector
The Australian government has announced a proposed demand mechanism intended to foster a national low carbon liquid fuel (LCLF) sector. Infrastructure and Transport Minister Catherine King noted that Australia currently exports approximately $5 billion worth of feedstock, including canola and tallow, which is processed into low-carbon fuel internationally and often sold back to Australian airlines.
Industry leaders and GrainGrowers chief executive Shona Gawel have welcomed the initiative. Gawel emphasized that a well-designed mechanism is essential for establishing a competitive domestic industry, which could create new markets for grain and oilseed growers while enhancing national fuel security. The goal of the proposal is to stimulate private capital investment into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production within Australia.
