Australia pushes road safety with intelligent transport tech in 2026 National Week

National Road Safety Week runs from 17‑24 May 2026 across Australia, aiming to reduce the roughly 1,350 annual road deaths. ITS Australia used the campaign to showcase how intelligent transport systems (ITS) are improving safety, citing tools such as advanced traffic modelling, smart intersections, adaptive signals, connected‑vehicle platforms, fatigue‑detection telemetry and real‑time incident‑response networks. CEO Susan Harris highlighted the partnership between government and industry as essential for delivering smarter, safer roads.

Wentworth Shire Council joined the nationwide effort, urging residents to take a pledge to drive without distractions, obey speed limits and protect vulnerable road users. The council outlined daily themes for the week, from remembering road‑trauma victims to promoting safe walking to school and caring for regional roads. Both initiatives stress community involvement and technology adoption as key to moving toward a zero‑death target.
