The New South Wales government continues to layer transport‑focused investments on top of its road‑safety, training and mining programmes. After the June budget earmarked $2.1 bn for Sydney Trains reliability, $2.5 m for heavy‑vehicle training at TAFE, a $561.4 m Transport Affordability Package and a $12 bn, 15‑year Hunter rail‑manufacturing plan, July saw the arrival of the first Siemens‑built train for the Western Sydney Airport line and a $290 m, nine‑year upgrade of the NSW TrainLink coach network. In parallel, the state’s effort to diversify the Hunter’s economy advanced on 13 July when federal and state ministers announced draft master plans to rezone the former Mt Arthur Coal Mine and the Macquarie Coal Complex. About 950 ha of a total 5,400 ha precinct will be earmarked for early‑activation renewable‑energy, advanced‑manufacturing, defence and warehousing projects, targeting roughly 5,900 jobs in the first phase and up to 1,130 permanent positions at the Macquarie site. A $381 million Muswellbrook bypass, funded $304.8 m by the federal government and $76.2 m by NSW, is progressing and is expected to divert around 2,500 heavy vehicles daily. NSW Labor formally backed a motion on 28 July to study reopening the 30‑km South Maitland Rail Corridor for passenger services between Maitland and Cessnock, reviving a line closed to passengers in 1972. Officials say the service could serve more than 65,000 residents, improve access to jobs and education, and make use of existing infrastructure at a fraction of the cost of major Sydney projects. The transport agenda broadened further on 28 July when the state granted planning approval for the multibillion‑dollar Hunter Transmission Project – a 110‑km, 500 kV overhead line linking renewable‑energy zones to the Hunter, Sydney and Illawarra regions.
