Australia hits 500,000 home battery installation milestone

Australia has reached a major milestone in its energy transition, with more than 500,000 home battery systems installed under the Federal Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program. The program, which has seen its funding expanded to $7.2 billion over four years, aims to help households store solar energy, reduce electricity bills, and alleviate pressure on the national grid.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese noted that the program is on track to meet its goal of two million installations by 2030, currently sitting at approximately 25 percent of that target midway through 2026. The rollout has also significantly impacted the labor market, with the number of accredited battery installers in the country doubling to 8,846 since the program's inception.

Data from the Australian Energy Market Operator indicates that these residential batteries are actively reshaping electricity demand patterns by supplying power during evening peaks after sunset. Most installations have been concentrated in regional and outer suburban communities, including high uptake areas such as western Sydney.
