Australia home battery market expansion
Overview
In late July 2026 Australian homeowners were offered two contrasting home‑energy storage options. Tesla’s Powerwall 3 delivered up to 13.5 kWh of usable capacity, 11 kW continuous output and an integrated inverter, with the ability to stack units for a combined 54 kWh. The Solis‑Alpha package paired a 5 kW AC‑coupled inverter with 26.6 kWh of storage, priced from AU$3,699 installed but without backup capability.
Government data released at the end of June showed the rapid growth of rooftop solar to 26.4 GW across roughly 3.9 million installations. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries rebate scheme had installed 487,000 discounted battery systems, providing about 13 GWh of behind‑the‑meter storage and on track to hit half a million installations by August.
By early August the programme’s momentum continued. More than 490,000 home‑battery systems had been installed by July 2026, still adding roughly 2,000 new units each week. A May rebate adjustment reduced discounts for larger batteries, shifting average system size toward 20‑30 kWh units while total volume remained three times the previous year’s level. Households such as the Gibbs family in Bedfordale reported up to 50 % savings on electricity bills after installing two 20 kWh batteries with 50 % of costs covered by federal and state rebates. The scheme is slated to receive an additional AU$7.2 billion over four years, aiming to reach more than two million homes and deliver around 40 GWh of extra storage by 2030.
