Australia sets AI data centre standards amid environmental concerns

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the creation of national standards for artificial intelligence and large data centres. The rules will require data centres to minimise water usage, maximise energy efficiency, and pay for any additional water infrastructure needed, as well as ensuring they contribute as much electricity as they consume. The government says the framework will give certainty for international investors while protecting national interests and establishing a social licence for AI development.

Environmental groups, including the Australian Conservation Foundation, warned that fast‑tracked approvals could hinder Australia’s clean‑energy transition and called for stronger safeguards on energy use, water consumption and community impacts. In New Zealand, rapid construction of data centres such as the planned Datagrid AI centre near Invercargill has proceeded without comparable safeguards, prompting criticism that the country is lagging behind Australia’s emerging policy framework.
