Australia launches national AI framework and Office of AI

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a national artificial intelligence framework that creates a new Office of AI within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. The framework sets mandatory standards for large AI data centres, requiring operators to underwrite new renewable power supply, improve water efficiency and fund grid‑connection infrastructure. It also establishes Australian Standards for AI, protects the ownership of works by Australian artists, writers and journalists, and pledges that AI‑related content must not be used without creators’ consent.

Engineers Australia welcomed the policy, urging that engineering expertise be central to AI regulation and implementation. The body noted that more than 40% of Australian engineers already use generative AI and called for coordinated training and curriculum development. Regional experts highlighted the need to include regional businesses in the rollout, while industry groups warned that the data‑centre expansion could compete with housing and other resource priorities.
