Australia unveils Roo-ver lunar rover prototype for 2030 mission

The Australian Space Agency has unveiled the prototype for Roo-ver, the nation’s first lunar rover. Designed to travel to the lunar south pole in 2030, the 20-kilogram vehicle is part of a national effort to contribute to NASA’s Artemis program.

Developed and built entirely in Australia, the rover features advanced technologies to survive the moon's extreme environment, including thermal management systems capable of handling temperatures between -246 °C and 121 °C, radiation mitigation, and specialized wheels for traversing loose regolith. The vehicle is equipped with cameras and sensors to identify hazards like rocks and craters in real time.

Testing of the prototype is currently underway at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane. Engineers are using specialized facilities, including a simulated lunar sandpit, to test the rover's ability to navigate uneven terrain and survive extreme diurnal cycles. The mission is part of a broader $42 million Australian initiative to support international space exploration under the Artemis Accords.
