Developments in lunar rover technology

Overview

Developments in lunar rover technology have been highlighted by new unveilings from both private and national space entities.

Venturi Space introduced the Alta Luna, a compact, 300 kg tracked rover designed for lunar habitat support. The vehicle can be manually piloted or operated autonomously using LiDAR and artificial intelligence to perform tasks such as site development and payload transport. It also includes biometric monitoring to autonomously return a pilot to base during medical emergencies.

Concurrently, the Australian Space Agency unveiled the prototype for Roo-ver, a 20-kilogram vehicle intended for a 2030 mission to the lunar south pole. Developed to support NASA’s Artemis program, the rover features specialized thermal management and radiation mitigation systems. Testing is currently being conducted at the Queensland University of Technology to evaluate its ability to navigate extreme lunar environments.
