Australian Army advances modernization with new vessels and vehicle trials

The Australian Army has reached two significant milestones in its military modernization efforts involving new equipment and sea transport capabilities.

First, the Army has taken delivery of three new bridge erection boats (BEBs) manufactured by the local company Birdon. These seven-meter vessels are designed for tactical float bridging and rafting operations, providing essential support when existing crossings are destroyed by conflict or natural disasters. The craft can also function as patrol vessels and are transportable via road, rail, and air.

Additionally, the Army successfully completed sea transport trials for its new AS21 Redback, AS9 Huntsman, and AS10 armoured vehicles aboard the HMAS Canberra. Conducted in Sydney Harbour, the tests confirmed that Royal Australian Navy amphibious assets can effectively transport and deploy these platforms for littoral operations. The Redback, a centerpiece of the LAND 400 Phase 3 programme, was ordered from Hanwha Aerospace to replace aging M113-family personnel carriers, with Australian-made units expected to begin production in 2027.
