Australian Army military modernization efforts
Overview
The Australian Army is advancing its military modernization through the procurement and testing of new bridging and amphibious logistics equipment.
Recent developments include the delivery of three Bridge Erection Boats (BEBs) manufactured by Birdon, which are designed for tactical float bridging, rafting, and patrol operations. These vessels are transportable via road, rail, and air to support operations when crossings are destroyed.
Further enhancements to amphibious capabilities involve the Landing Craft Medium (LCM) program. This initiative includes the construction of 18 steel-hulled vessels at Austal’s shipyards in Western Australia, capable of transporting payloads up to 80 tonnes. Kongsberg Maritime has reached an agreement to provide Kamewa Steel Series waterjets for this fleet.
Additionally, the Army has successfully conducted sea transport trials in Sydney Harbour using the HMAS Canberra to test the deployment of AS21 Redback, AS9 Huntsman, and AS10 armoured vehicles for littoral operations.
