Australian authorities charge man for smuggling 163 reptiles to Hong Kong

A 21-year-old Chinese man has been charged after allegedly attempting to smuggle 163 native Australian reptiles from Sydney to Hong Kong via air freight. The Australian Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported that investigators intercepted 38 parcels containing various species, including blue-tongued lizards, whip-tailed lizards, and cane turtles.

The animals were reportedly concealed within shipments of handbags and slippers sent between December 2025 and March 2026. Authorities noted that international wildlife trafficking syndicates often target Australian breeders to source native animals for illegal trade.

Under Australian national environmental law, the unauthorized export of regulated wildlife carries penalties of up to 10 years in prison or significant fines. Those found assisting or profiting from illegal wildlife trade can face up to 20 years of imprisonment. The suspect is currently held in custody and is expected to appear in court on October 28.
