Australian illegal reptile trafficking enforcement

Overview

Australian authorities have intercepted multiple shipments of illegal reptiles involving both export and import violations.

In one instance, a 21-year-old man was charged for allegedly attempting to smuggle 163 native Australian reptiles, including blue-tongued lizards and cane turtles, from Sydney to Hong Kong. The animals were reportedly concealed in shipments of handbags and slippers sent via air freight between December 2025 and March 2026.

In a separate enforcement action in New South Wales, authorities seized 44 illegally imported exotic reptiles, such as Burmese pythons, boa constrictors, and various tortoises. Many of these species are listed under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). The National Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identified several of the seized animals as noxious and invasive to local ecosystems.
