Australian authorities investigate separate terrorism incidents
Australian law enforcement agencies have brought terrorism charges against two individuals in separate investigations.
A 22-year-old man in Perth is facing upgraded charges that include planning a terrorist act, which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Police allege the individual sought information on military training, explosive devices, weapons manufacturing, and combat techniques via a messaging platform. Investigators also reportedly seized an electronic device containing violent extremist material.
In Darwin, a teenager is facing charges after a Joint Counter Terrorism Team raid. The individual is accused of collecting documents to facilitate terrorist acts, including schematics for 3D-printed firearms. Authorities state the teenager allegedly operated social media channels used to access and repost violent extremist material. The Australian Federal Police have expressed growing concern regarding the speed and scale of online radicalization among young people.
