Australian youth and online radicalisation concerns
Overview
Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett has warned of rising radicalisation among teenage boys, some as young as 12. During Senate Estimates, Barrett reported that 55 cases involving individuals aged 12 to 17 showed radicalisation occurring primarily through digital platforms. The Commissioner noted that these youths often display hybrid or incoherent extremist ideologies and that radicalisation is not exclusively linked to unstable home environments.
Law enforcement actions have highlighted these concerns. In Perth, a 22-year-old man faces upgraded charges for allegedly planning a terrorist act after seeking information on military training, weapons manufacturing, and combat techniques via a messaging platform. Investigators reportedly seized an electronic device containing violent extremist material.
In Darwin, investigations have led to charges against two teenagers. One teenager was charged for allegedly possessing documents to facilitate terrorist acts, including schematics for 3D-printed firearms and explosives, and for allegedly operating social media channels to access and repost violent extremist material. A second teenager in Darwin has been charged after a Joint Counter Terrorism Team probe into the online sharing of extremist content. During a search of a Darwin home, investigators seized electronic devices, weapons, and documents. Authorities allege the seized material contained discussions with a “mixed ideological motivation,” including the glorification of mass casualty attacks at schools. The teenager faces charges for making documents likely to facilitate terrorist attacks.
Commissioner Barrett has noted that youths are often “manipulated” on social media, seeking answers to polarizing issues in online spaces that may lead them to violent platforms.
