Australia: AFP Commissioner warns of rising threats to MPs
Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett has warned that inflammatory political discourse is directly correlated to an increase in threats and abuse against parliamentarians. Barrett noted that the volume of threats has risen significantly due to online communication, with reports of harassing and threatening behavior targeting federal officials exceeding 1,000 in the 2025-26 period. One person is reportedly charged with a criminal offense related to such threats every week.
The warnings follow a violent incident in Wangaratta where independent MP Helen Haines was struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office, resulting in the amputation of both her legs. In response to the attack and the broader threat environment, the Labor government is developing a package of security measures to improve safety for politicians.
Other political figures, including Social Services Minister Tanya Plibersek, have urged leaders to maintain robust debate without resorting to cruelty, noting that the impact of heated rhetoric extends beyond politicians to include teachers, shop assistants, and children.
