Political violence against Australian lawmakers

Overview

A series of violent incidents targeting female politicians in Australia has prompted significant security concerns and calls for increased protection for parliamentarians.

In Victoria, independent federal lawmaker Helen Haines was struck by a vehicle outside her office in Wangaratta. The incident left Haines in critical condition, requiring the amputation of both legs. In Western Australia, a man was charged after allegedly entering the electorate office of State Minister Hannah Beazley while brandishing weapons and making verbal threats.

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett has linked a surge in violent threats to inflamed political rhetoric, noting that police are receiving enough threats to result in one person being charged with criminal offences every week. In response, Western Australian Premier Roger Cook announced a review of security measures for Parliament House and private residences, while the Labor Party began developing a package to enhance the safety of politicians.
