Australian government implements aged care fee protections

The Australian government is implementing measures to address rising costs for older Australians. Amendments to the Aged Care Rules 2025 will prohibit residential aged care providers from charging residents a Higher Everyday Living Fee (HELF) for services that were previously provided at no additional cost prior to November 1, 2025.

Aged Care and Seniors Minister Sam Rae stated the crackdown responds to concerns that providers were imposing unreasonable fees on existing residents. Patricia Sparrow, chief of the Council on the Ageing (COTA) Australia, supported the move, describing the practice of charging for previously free services as unethical.

Separately, pensioners are facing increased financial pressure following the Labor government's decision to scrap the private health insurance rebate for individuals over 65. An independent MP has criticized the measure, suggesting it places an unfair cost burden on older Australians.
