Anthony Albanese faces backlash over Japanese gift remarks

During the interview with host Nikki Osborne, Albanese discussed crown melons gifted to him by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, using hand gestures and language that many interpreted as sexual innuendo regarding Takaichi’s body.

Opposition leaders, including Angus Taylor, have demanded a formal apology, labeling the behavior “disrespectful” and “classless.” The controversy has escalated as the Coalition has requested that the Australian Federal Police investigate the potential leak of a diplomatic note from Tokyo to Canberra concerning the incident. The Coalition argues that the unauthorized disclosure of confidential correspondence could damage Australia’s strategic partnership with Japan.

In response, Japanese Ambassador Kazuhiro Suzuki issued a statement attempting to de-escalate the situation, noting that the Japanese government was aware of the reports and that the original meeting between the leaders was held in a “very relaxed atmosphere.” Albanese has rejected calls for an apology, maintaining that the relationship between Australia and Japan remains strong and strategically aligned.
