Australian PM Albanese says fuel reserves secure amid Iran war

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters that Australia’s fuel stockpiles are sufficient through July, with 43 days of petrol, 38 days of diesel and 31 days of jet fuel in national reserves – each level higher than at the start of the Iran‑related oil disruption in late February. He said hoarding by drivers has ended and consumers are taking only what they need.

Energy Minister Chris Bowen added that 48 cargo ships carrying a total of 3.4 billion litres of fuel, including 1.8 billion litres of diesel, are en route to Australia and will arrive over the next month. The government met virtually with state and territory leaders to coordinate the response, noting that the supply situation remains stable despite a fragile cease‑fire and a blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, which handles about one‑fifth of global oil flows.
