Fuel tax expires, reserves high as prices climb
Entities: Anthony Albanese · Strait of Hormuz · Australian Government · Wyndham
Overview
Australia’s strategic fuel stockpiles remain at a record 6.5 billion litres – enough for 46 days of petrol, 39 days of diesel and 34 days of jet fuel – the highest level since mandatory holding rules began. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed 55 tankers are en route and a further 3.2 billion litres are expected within four weeks as the conflict in the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea continues to threaten global oil shipments.
The temporary fuel‑excise relief of 16 c per litre expired on 2 August, with Parliament confirming the rate reverts to 32 c per litre. Albanese said the rebate will not be renewed, citing lower fuel demand and persistent volatility in global oil markets – Brent crude remains above US$100 a barrel amidst renewed Middle‑East fighting, recent Houthi attacks on Saudi facilities and heightened US‑Iran tensions.
Transport bodies such as the Australian Trucking Association and the Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association have again urged a delay to the road‑user charge increase, warning that higher diesel costs will squeeze margins for long‑haul haulers and rural freight operators. In Victoria’s Wyndham municipality, the loss of the discount is expected to raise household fuel costs, prompting promotion of the State Government’s Servo Saver tool to help drivers locate the cheapest pumps.
Analysts project unleaded petrol to breach AU$2 per litre and diesel to follow, while the NRMA cautions the combined fuel‑price shock could embed higher inflation expectations. The Reserve Bank of Australia is now pricing an increased likelihood of a fourth cash‑rate hike at its August meeting.
