Overview

Treasurer Jim Chalmers urged the ACCC to intensify scrutiny of retailers to prevent profiteering, noting the regulator is “watching them like a hawk” and warning of fines up to $100 million for unjustified hikes. A surplus of diesel remains due to a 10% import surge in the April-June quarter, leaving tankers anchored off the coast at a cost to taxpayers. This surge in fuel imports contributed to Australia’s goods-trade surplus falling to a nine-year low of US$1.1 billion in the June quarter. While global oil prices and the end of subsidies drive costs upward, the Motor Trades Association of Australia reported no evidence of panic buying at service stations.
