Australian PM Albanese secures extra diesel shipment amid fuel price worries

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that Australia has secured an additional shipment of diesel, now en route to Port Botany, through Export Finance Australia. Since February the government has obtained 800 million litres of diesel, 155 million litres of jet fuel and 340,000 tonnes of fertiliser, giving the country about 44 days of petrol and 39 days of diesel reserves, with 51 ships expected to arrive.

Albanese said the government had worked hard to protect Australians from the global surge in fuel prices caused by the Middle‑East conflict, but acknowledged uncertainty about when prices would fall. The fuel excise is due to end on 30 June, and a decision on its future will be made in the coming days. In the same briefing, Albanese congratulated the Socceroos after their 2‑0 World Cup loss to the United States.
