Australian police launch probe into alleged Israeli abuse of Gaza aid flotilla activists

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) have opened an inquiry into allegations that Israeli forces raped, tortured, and otherwise abused members of the Global Sumud aid flotilla after it was intercepted in international waters on 18 May. Hundreds of activists were detained, including 11 Australians. Representatives of the group met with Foreign Minister Penny Wong and senior officials in Canberra, where Wong said the government would pursue an independent, victim‑centred investigation. The AFP said it would handle the case with a “trauma‑informed” approach and will provide updates when appropriate.

Israel has rejected the claims, stating there is no credible evidence and describing the activists as “professional provocateurs”. The controversy follows a video posted by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben‑Gvir that mocked detained activists, sparking international condemnation and travel bans against the minister in several countries.
