Global Sumud Gaza flotilla controversy and investigations

Overview

In May 2026 Israeli forces seized the Global Sumud humanitarian convoy, detaining activists from over 40 nations. Diplomatic pressure secured a wave of releases in June, including ten Black Convoy members freed after talks in Turkey and subsequent flights to Istanbul or transfers to Tunisia. Libya later expelled Maghreb convoy activists, moving some to the Italian consul for transport while others awaited repatriation. Detentions continued elsewhere; a 67‑year‑old Italian activist, Leonarda Alberizia, spent weeks in isolation before being moved to a Benghazi prison without legal access. Italian senator Marco Croatti used her case to demand a permanent Gaza aid corridor, and Amnesty International documented forced disappearances and unauthorised‑gathering charges. President Isaac Herzog rejected European calls for sanctions during a visit to Romania. In early July the IDF opened a command‑level inquiry after a photo showed a blindfolded Gaza detainee, and the Global Sumud flotilla set sail on 13 July with 43 boats. Israeli drones attacked the convoy near Crete, jammed its Starlink links and later detained participants in Ketziot prison amid abuse reports.

On 17 July the IDF closed 57 criminal investigations into detainee deaths and alleged beatings, none resulting in indictments. The following day Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar claimed Hamas financed and operated the flotilla, presenting the missions as a security threat. France opened a probe on 21 July into alleged torture of two French flotilla participants, including deputy Marie Mesmeur, who reported beatings, deprivation of basic needs and a broken rib while in Israeli custody.
