Australian savers advised to adjust tax, super and budgeting for 2026 financial year

Financial advisers recommend Australians rethink their personal finance strategies for the 2026 fiscal year. The newly introduced $1,000 automatic tax deduction, part of a broader tax package that includes changes to negative gearing and capital gains tax, may actually increase costs for some taxpayers, so individuals are urged to track deductible expenses before claiming.

Key tactics include "bill smoothing" – aggregating irregular large payments to set a realistic savings target each pay period – and "bill moving", shifting payments such as registrations and insurance to cheaper periods. Automating regular savings, using offset accounts for mortgage interest, or investing surplus cash in exchange‑traded funds are also suggested.

Superannuation rules now require super to be paid alongside salary, and eligible earners can claim a $500 bonus by contributing $1,000 after‑tax, or a $540 tax offset for couples where the lower earner receives a $3,000 contribution. Maintaining private hospital cover remains advisable for incomes above $105,000. These steps aim to mitigate the impact of ongoing war‑related market volatility and help Australians achieve an 8% return target for the year.
