Australian states boost road safety with $232M investment
The New South Wales Government announced a $230 million investment to fund 83 road safety upgrades across the state. The projects, part of the Towards Zero Safer Roads Program, will add continuous safety barriers on the Hume Highway between Mittagong and the Victorian border, improve intersections on the Newell Highway, Great Western Highway and Old Hume Highway, and install new traffic signals and pedestrian crossings at several high‑risk sites. "Every life lost on our roads is one too many," said Roads and Regional Transport Minister Jenny Aitchison.
In Victoria, the Manningham Council began work on the first of 11 local road safety projects under a $2 million Safe Local Roads and Streets Program. The initial upgrade at the Beauty Gully Road and Harris Gully Road intersection aims to lower vehicle speeds and improve driver visibility. Mayor Jim Grivas highlighted that many local roads were built for far lighter traffic and now require modern safety standards. Additional works on school travel routes are scheduled for the September‑October school holidays to minimise disruption.
