NSW road safety upgrades rollout
Overview
In late July 2026 the New South Wales government announced a $230 million program to fund 83 road‑safety upgrades across the state. The plan, part of the Towards Zero Safer Roads initiative, called for continuous safety barriers on the Hume Highway, improvements to intersections on the Newell, Great Western and Old Hume highways, and new traffic signals and pedestrian crossings at high‑risk sites. The announcement was accompanied by a separate Victorian local‑road safety effort funded by the Manningham Council.
By early August 2026 the same NSW road‑safety package was reiterated, with Minister Jenny Aitchison again highlighting its goal of reducing serious crashes. In addition, the Australian federal government pledged up to $73.5 million to expand the Restoring Murray Waterways Project, upgrading creeks, wetlands and floodplains in the Edward‑Wakool system and adding fish‑friendly crossings. The combined announcements underscored a coordinated push to improve both transport safety and environmental flows in New South Wales.
