Australian states expand fuel storage to enhance energy security

The Queensland government has fast‑tracked a lease extension for BP at the Bulwer Island facility in Brisbane, giving the company certainty through 2061 and unlocking up to AUD 100 million to refurbish five idle storage tanks. Phase 1, slated for 2027‑2029, will add 54 million litres of diesel, petrol and aviation fuel, increasing BP’s capacity at the site by about 20 %. A second phase could add another 49 million litres if feasible.

In South Australia, the state signed a deal with bulk‑fuel supplier IOR to store 10 million litres of diesel at the Port Bonython storage site, with a further 10 million litres available on request. The reserve supports primary producers, mining and other regional industries and complements the federal plan to hold up to 53 days of diesel on‑shore. Both initiatives are part of broader Australian fuel‑security strategies aimed at reducing reliance on global supply disruptions and bolstering resilience for transport, agriculture, tourism and essential services.
