Australian Transplant Games participants highlight organ donation need
Organ transplant recipients Cameron Butcher and Kaitlyn Steavenson are preparing to compete in the 18th Australian Transplant Games in Launceston.
Butcher, a 26-year-old cycling coach, received a heart transplant in 2024 after being diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy. He is now training extensively to compete in cycling, tennis, swimming, and field events.
Steavenson, who received a kidney transplant in 2022 after 15 years on dialysis, will participate in her second Transplant Games. Her experience highlights the critical need for organ donors.
Medical officials note a significant gap between public support and registration rates. While 90 percent of Victorians support organ donation, the state's registration rate is 23 percent, which is lower than the national average of 36 percent. Dr. Rohit D’Costa of DonateLife Victoria is urging citizens to register and inform their families of their wishes.
