Australia's AI policy debate intensifies after Albanese speech

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s recent speech highlighted the rapid integration of artificial intelligence in Australia and signaled a shift toward addressing the technology’s risks. Experts warned that workers may be compelled to adopt AI systems without adequate alternatives, raising concerns about job security, especially for older employees and those nearing retirement. The Fair Work and Privacy Acts allow employees to change jobs if AI is used unethically, but critics say this protection is ineffective for highly specialised professions.

Unions, artists, and environmental groups have called for clearer safeguards, citing issues such as potential job losses, copyright infringement of creative works, and the high energy consumption of data centres. ACTU secretary Sally McManus emphasized that while AI could create opportunities, it must not harm working Australians. The debate will feature prominently at the Labor Party’s annual conference in Adelaide, where upskilling strategies and ethical AI deployment are expected to be discussed.
