Australia's digital sovereignty hinges on Starlink expansion and data centre policy

Starlink, originally promoted as a rural satellite broadband service, now serves more than half a million Australian customers and is moving toward a broader digital platform that includes AI, payments and other services. Analysts warn that this shift could repeat the pattern in which global hyperscalers capture the most valuable digital services while Australian telcos are left with only infrastructure, raising questions about who will fund and control the next generation of the nation’s telecommunications network.

A parliamentary inquiry in New South Wales is examining the rapid growth of data centres, arguing that they are critical to Australia’s sovereign digital future and to emerging AI, advanced computing and quantum industries. Witnesses such as Emergence Quantum CEO David Reilly said, “Whoever can build out a data centre today and seize that lead … will be well placed to build out the data centres of tomorrow.” The inquiry also highlighted concerns about energy, water use and the need for policy that balances economic opportunity with environmental and equity considerations.
