Australia's federal and Victorian governments plan multicultural policy changes

Senator Sean Bell of One Nation announced that the party would abolish the federal Office for Multicultural Affairs and the Minister for Multiculturalism, arguing that government services should be provided only in English. Bell said, "We believe that multiculturalism is not working. We believe it should be scrapped," and criticised translated services as fostering dependence.

In Victoria, the state government said it will soon open applications for senior leadership roles in a proposed new statutory body, Multicultural Victoria. The body will merge the Victorian Multicultural Commission and Multicultural Affairs Victoria and take on new duties such as safety planning for communities after serious events. Legislation is expected later this year before the entity is established.
