Australia's fuel excise relief ends August 2

The Australian federal government’s temporary fuel excise relief, which cut the excise from 32 cents to 16 cents per litre, began on 1 April and was extended through July. Parliament confirmed the measure will lapse on 2 August, meaning the full excise rate returns and motorists can expect higher pump prices. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the relief will not be renewed, noting that fuel usage has fallen and that continued conflict in the Middle East – including recent Houthi attacks on Saudi facilities and renewed US‑Iran tensions – is keeping global oil markets volatile, with Brent crude above US$100 a barrel.

In Victoria, especially the Wyndham municipality where many residents rely on cars, the end of the discount is likely to raise household fuel costs. The State Government’s Servo Saver tool, accessible via the Service Victoria app, lets drivers compare daily maximum fuel prices before filling up. The government warns that petrol could exceed $2 per litre as wholesale costs and exchange‑rate factors combine with the reinstated excise.
