Australia's Home Battery Program Drives Rapid Installations

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries scheme, launched in July 2025, has seen more than 490,000 home battery systems installed by July 2026, adding over 13 GWh of behind‑the‑meter storage. Energy Minister Chris Bowen said roughly 2,000 new systems are still being installed each week. After the rebate was adjusted in May to reduce discounts for larger batteries, average system size fell by about half, shifting demand toward 20‑30 kWh units, but total installation volume remains roughly three times the year‑ago level.

Households are reporting substantial bill reductions. In the Perth suburb of Bedfordale, David and Ellen Gibbs installed two 20 kWh batteries at a cost of $32,000, with 50 % covered by federal and state rebates, and now pay about $650 per month—almost a 50 % saving. The program is slated to receive an additional $7.2 billion over four years, targeting more than two million Australian homes by 2030 and delivering around 40 GWh of extra storage capacity.
