Australia’s HYROX Event Sets Record with Nearly 30,000 Participants

HYROX, the world’s fastest‑growing fitness sport, attracted about 2.5 million competitors worldwide this season, according to director Mat Lock. Australia has become a key market, and the sport’s biggest Australian event was held at Sydney Showground, drawing almost 30,000 athletes over five days – a record for the country.

Competitors aged 16 to 75 ran eight one‑kilometre laps, each followed by functional challenges such as burpees, farmer’s carries, SkiErg rowing and wall balls. The massive turnout highlighted HYROX’s rapid rise in Australia.

The story also profiles Jon Wynn, a former Australian Special Forces commando who overcame severe addiction and PTSD after multiple tours in Afghanistan. After rehab and a return to fitness, Wynn embraced HYROX, now runs a performance‑coaching business, and was part of the Australian mixed‑relay team that won the HYROX World Championships in Stockholm. The sport, founded in Germany in 2017, continues to draw participants seeking both physical challenge and personal purpose.
