Australia's national debt surpasses $1 trillion milestone
Australia’s gross Commonwealth Government debt has surpassed the $1 trillion milestone for the first time. This increase is attributed to pandemic-era spending and the rising costs of government services, resulting in approximately $36,000 of debt per person.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers defended the government’s fiscal record, stating that Labor remains a responsible economic manager. He noted that Australia’s debt-to-GDP ratio remains lower than many other major advanced economies. Health Minister Mark Butler also provided international context, arguing that the debt level is significantly lower than that of nations such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan.
The federal opposition has criticized the government, claiming there is no viable plan to reduce the debt. Shadow Treasurer Tim Wilson and Deputy Opposition Leader Jane Hume argued that rising debt contributes to inflation and increases interest rates. The opposition highlighted that annual interest payments are approaching $30 billion, a figure they claim exceeds spending on childcare, unemployment benefits, or the Australian Defence Force.
