Australia's used EV market slashes prices as hybrid sales surge

In Australia, used electric‑vehicle prices have dropped by more than 20% after sharp cuts on new EVs, putting several models under 40,000 Australian dollars. Eight standout used EVs highlighted include the Cupra Born, BYD Dolphin, Polestar 2, Hyundai Kona Electric, BYD Atto 3, MG 4, Tesla Model Y and Tesla Model 3.

Meanwhile, the Australian hybrid market posted 104,864 sales in the first half of 2026, an 11.9% increase year‑on‑year. Toyota remains the sector leader with 44,122 deliveries but saw a 20.2% decline, while Hyundai grew 60.8% and Kia surged 139.1%, overtaking rivals such as GWM and Subaru. Other notable players include the Chinese brand GWM, Honda, MG, Chery and Nissan. The Toyota RAV4 continues to dominate hybrid shipments, with Hyundai’s Tucson and Kona also posting strong numbers.

Both trends reflect changing consumer preferences amid rising fuel costs, with cheaper used EVs offering a more affordable path to electrification and hybrids maintaining strong demand despite competition from fully electric models.
