Austria addresses rising extremism and radicalization threats

Experts and officials in Austria are addressing the rising threats of extremism and radicalization, emphasizing the need for integrated prevention strategies that span both digital and physical environments.

At the 37th ACIPSS conference in Vienna, State Secretary Jörg Leichtfried reported significant increases in registered extremist activities. Compared to the previous year, incidents related to Islamist extremism and terrorism rose by 42.3 percent, while right-wing extremism increased by 33.6 percent. The discussions also highlighted concerns regarding espionage, disinformation, and gender-based hate.

In a separate forum organized by the Austrian Integration Fund (ÖIF) in Bregenz, specialists discussed countering radical Islamist currents. Lisa Fellhofer, Director of the Documentation Center for Political Islam, noted that extremists are increasingly successful when they operate simultaneously online and offline. Experts suggested that prevention must extend beyond social media bans to include schools, religious institutions, and peer groups. Additionally, concerns were raised regarding the influence of foreign state religious authorities on domestic associations, specifically citing the Turkish-Islamic Union (ATIB).
