Extremism and radicalization in Austria

Austrian authorities have initiated actions to combat rising extremism. Following a nationwide crackdown coordinated by the State Security and Intelligence Service, investigations were launched into digital activities on platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram, resulting in one arrest in Vorarlberg and reports against 20 individuals for alleged violations of the Prohibition Act and incitement to hatred.

Subsequent discussions at the 37th ACIPSS conference in Vienna highlighted a significant increase in extremist activities. State Secretary Jörg Leichtfried reported that incidents related to Islamist extremism and terrorism rose by 42.3 percent, while right-wing extremism increased by 33.6 percent compared to the previous year.

Experts have emphasized that radicalization is increasingly occurring through simultaneous online and offline operations. Prevention strategies are being discussed to extend beyond social media bans to include schools, religious institutions, and peer groups, with specific concerns raised regarding the influence of foreign state religious authorities on domestic associations.
