Austria advances plan to ban ‘political Islam’

Integration Minister Claudia Bauer (ÖVP) has announced that a 24-point plan to ban ‘political Islam’ in Austria is being finalized for coalition discussions. The proposed measures include banning organizations such as the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas, alongside implementing stricter state oversight of Islamic religious education.

Bauer emphasized that the goal is not to abolish religious instruction, but to prevent radicalization by ensuring that education follows Austrian rules and values. She expressed concerns that without state-regulated instruction, socialization might occur exclusively through mosques or social media platforms like TikTok.

Additionally, the Minister criticized the current financial arrangement where tax money flows from religious teachers to the Islamic Community in Austria (IGGÖ). She argued for a model where teachers are directly employed by the state to ensure better supervision of teaching materials and qualifications.

Ümit Vural, President of the IGGÖ, responded by stating the community is willing to discuss quality and qualifications but rejected the implication that there is currently a lack of state oversight or quality assurance.
