The legislative push in Austria to ban ‘political Islam’ has intensified, with government officials targeting specific organizations and legal frameworks. Integration Minister Claudia Bauer has expanded the scope of the debate by calling for bans on the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamist organizations, including Hezbollah and Hizb ut-Tahrir. Describing political Islam as an ‘invisible infiltration’ of established institutions, Bauer is drafting proposals to amend association, assembly, and residency laws. While she later stated a ban on the Islamic Religious Community in Austria (IGGÖ) is ‘not on the table,’ the IGGÖ has criticized the government for ‘blanket suspicions.’

Recent data has further fueled this political friction. A study by the Austrian Integration Fund shows that 52 percent of respondents identify ‘political Islam’ as a major negative influence on social coexistence, ranking it alongside war and terrorism. The research also indicates that 70 percent of respondents express concerns regarding cultural identity, up from 57 percent in 2018, and half of the population reported feeling disturbed by having Muslims as direct neighbors.

While the ÖVP uses these findings to push for a constitutional ban to protect the rule of law, constitutional jurists warn of significant legal hurdles. The IGGÖ continues to express concerns regarding a potential ‘general suspicion’ against the faith.
