Austria allocates €24 million to climate model regions and funds heat‑protection projects
The Climate and Energy Fund announced a total of €24 million for Austria’s existing climate‑ and energy‑model regions (KEM and KLAR!). The funding includes €22 million for the KEM and KLAR! tender programmes and an additional €2 million for the KLAR! Invest call, supporting measures such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable mobility and climate‑adaptation actions.
In Carinthia, the state government approved €4 million for heat‑protection projects in schools, kindergartens and care homes. Within three weeks, municipalities submitted 85 proposals worth €1.4 million, with 80 % of costs subsidised and a maximum of €9,000 per facility for air‑conditioning rooms. The measures aim to reduce heat‑related strain on children, staff and older residents.
Both initiatives are part of Austria’s broader effort to meet national climate targets, improve resilience to rising temperatures, and boost regional preparedness for climate impacts.
