Austria heat protection initiatives

In late July 2026, Austria’s Climate and Energy Fund announced a €24 million package for the country’s climate‑ and energy‑model regions, including €2 million earmarked for heat‑protection projects in schools, kindergartens and care homes in Carinthia. The funding aims to subsidise air‑conditioning rooms and improve resilience to rising temperatures.

A week later, the Austrian real‑estate association (WKÖ) called for a comprehensive heat‑protection package that is integrated into the broader building‑renovation strategy. It criticised a ministerial decree that treated heat protection as a stand‑alone measure, arguing that effective solutions must be linked to insulation, ventilation, heating conversion, financing and social partners. The association submitted concrete proposals to the working group drafting the overall renovation plan.

Together, the two snapshots show the transition from initial funding allocation to stakeholder pressure for a coordinated, policy‑wide approach to heat protection in Austria’s building stock.
