Austria Boosts Danube Flood Protection with €17 Million Investment

The Austrian state announced a €17 million investment over the next two years to complete four flood‑protection projects along the Danube in Bad Deutsch‑Altenburg, Melk, Neustadtl an der Donau and Krems‑Stein. The funding, secured in the 2027‑2028 double‑budget, will close remaining gaps identified after the historic 2002 flood, which caused over €2 billion in damage, and the autumn 2024 flood that alone inflicted roughly €1 billion.

Alongside structural measures, the program emphasizes river renaturation. Ongoing projects include the "Auenwildnis Wachau" initiative, additional works at Schallemmersdorf, the Pielach and Leitha rivers, and a preparation phase for the Große Tulln site. Experts cite benefits such as reduced flood peaks, expanded habitats for fish and birds, and lower operational strain on fire‑brigade resources. The combined approach aims to improve safety for local communities while restoring ecological functions of the Danube corridor.
